Tolu felt frustrated. This was the third time in a week that his phone screen would suddenly freeze and prevent him from making or taking calls; or use it in any way for that matter.
This was the phone he had bought second-hand from a reputable vendor in Computer Village. He had saved up for months to buy that phone and had repeatedly dipped into his savings as rising prices made it impossible for him to stick to his plan.
On adding part of his latest salary after saving up by living on a month-long lean diet, he finally managed to reach his goal. He was hoping that the exchange rate had not risen again as it had done the last time when he left the vendor’s store empty handed and disappointed.
To think all that trouble was only for him to end up with a faulty phone.
An up-to-date smartphone was important in today’s world for anyone who hoped to make a living from engagements on social media.
As an oblivious and engrossed Tolu rued his predicament, a keen-eyed Rasheed sitting right behind him and close to the door of the bus, plotted his move.
‘Nice phone’, he thought. ‘Should make a quick sale at Costain. Next bus stop I will alight, snatch the carelessly held merchandise and dash into Scopido’s den. Dem boys will cover me sharp sharp.
The unwary Tolu kept tapping on his phone screen, hoping it would respond. ‘Nothing doing!, he exclaimed, as his intrusive thoughts slipped out. His irritation was by now visible, as he thought of how he would have to go out of his way to return to the vendor with his complaint.
Rasheed saw the display and decided it was not worth it. He needed a good phone not a ‘fejerun’ (manual). He got down at the next bus stop dejected.
Little did Tolu know what his frozen screen ordeal had saved him from.
